New Low Carbon Heating Engineering Occupational Specialism added to T Level in Building Services Engineering
We are pleased to announce that Low Carbon Heating Engineering has been approved as a new Occupational Specialism within the T Level in Building Services Engineering for Construction (BSE), for delivery from September 2026. This important development reflects the rapidly increasing demand for expertise in sustainable construction and low carbon technologies—skills that are vital to supporting the UK’s transition to net zero.
This new specialism enhances the already strong foundation offered by the T Level in Building Services Engineering for Construction, which equips learners for a broad range of construction and building services careers, including plumbing, heating, electrotechnical engineering, and refrigeration and air conditioning. Alongside their chosen specialism, learners build core knowledge in construction principles, sustainability, building services systems, digital technologies, and industry standards.
By introducing Low Carbon Heating Engineering, the T Level in Building Services Engineering for Construction is more closely aligned than ever with evolving industry needs. The sector is experiencing significant growth in technologies such as heat pumps, smart heating controls, and energy efficient heating systems—all essential components of the UK’s low carbon strategy. Embedding these technologies within the T Level ensures learners develop a cutting edge skillset that prepares them for modern, future focused careers and helps employers address urgent workforce demands.
The addition of this specialism represents a major investment in the future workforce and the development of green skills across the construction sector. We look forward to supporting providers and learners as this pathway is introduced and will continue to share updates as implementation progresses.
