Awarding our Level 3 Applied Certificates and Diplomas in Summer 2021

Clarification on arrangements for awarding our Level 3 Applied Certificates and Diplomas in Summer 2021 for learners who are part-way through their course (mid-flight learners)

We are able to provide some additional clarification on the arrangements for awarding our Level Level 3 Applied Certificates and Diplomas in Summer 2021 for learners who are part-way through their course (mid-flight learners). Whilst our priority has been to secure the qualification results for this summer, we are aware that learner’s who are mid-way through their qualifications have also had their teaching and learning disrupted.

As previously communicated, Applied Certificate and Diploma learners entered for units this summer but not cashing in the qualification, for example, learners in Year 12 who are part-way through a two-year Applied Diploma course, will not be issued with a unit outcome this summer.

For these learners, the following arrangements will apply for the award of our Applied Diploma qualifications in 2021:

Option 1: learners sit only the additional Diploma units in summer 2021 and the Diploma grade is based solely on these.

Option 2a: learners sit all the Certificate units in autumn 2020 and/or summer 2021 and the Diploma units in Summer 2021. The Diploma grade is based on their performance across all units.

Option 2b: Learners can choose to enter the Diploma units/assessments and some Certificate units/assessments

Where a learner chooses Option 2(a) or (b), we will also calculate the grade they would have achieved had they chosen Option 1. The grade they are awarded will be the best of these. This will ensure fairness for learners regardless of which option they choose.

The above arrangements only apply to learners who were entered for assessments this summer and who will be completing their Applied Diploma qualification in summer 2021. Learners who will be starting an Applied Diploma qualification in September 2020 and completing it in one-year are not able to access these options.

The calculated Certificate grade from summer 2020 cannot be used in the production of the Diploma grade in summer 2021, since we will only provide a grade this summer and no Uniform Mark Scale (UMS) scores will be issued. The calculated grade does not provide us with sufficient detail to use in providing the Diploma grade in summer 2021. Therefore, the options stated above, are the only available options in the summer 2021 series.
