Eduqas supports ground-breaking creative-critical teaching project
Eduqas is delighted to be supporting the ‘Beyond the Essay: Creative-Critical Teaching’ project, an ambitious new initiative that aims to rethink the role of creative-critical practice in the study of literature across schools and universities.
Led by Thomas Karshan at the University of East Anglia and Kate Bomford at the Institute of Education, the three-year project will bring together academics, teachers, professional organisations and awarding bodies to explore how creative approaches can enrich the teaching, learning and assessment of English Literature.

Running from 2026 to 2029, the project will focus on the historical, practical and institutional dimensions of literary study and aims to strengthen the relationship between creative practice and critical analysis.
Key outcomes will include:
- The first comprehensive history of literature teaching in the UK
- Classroom-based research into creative-critical teaching approaches
- The development of open-access teaching resources
- Collaboration between universities, schools, teachers and awarding bodies
- Contributions to future policy discussions on English education
The project brings together a wide range of organisations and experts, including the English Association, NATE, University English, the English and Media Centre, and awarding bodies from across the UK.
By connecting secondary and higher education and encouraging innovative approaches to literary study, the project aims to create a more dynamic and integrated future for English teaching and learning.
