How to use AI responsibly with your school or college assessments

With the growing popularity of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Grammarly, it’s important for students to be using these tools responsibly with their school or college assessments.

As one of the UK’s largest exam boards, here are our top tips so you can make sure you’re using AI correctly within your work!

Stay safe

Before getting started, don’t just use any tool boasting AI features – take a moment to ensure it’s reputable and safe. Once you’re confident that you’re using an appropriate tool, you should also avoid sharing personal information such as contact and login details, or any other sensitive information.

Know the rules

AI tools can’t be used during exams, but you may be allowed to use them for certain coursework. This will depend on the qualification, so you should always check with your teacher first to see if this is the case.

Reference clearly

When AI tools are allowed, make sure you’re referencing them clearly within your coursework. This includes the name of the tool, the date content is generated, and how you used it. You should also take a screenshot when generating AI content as proof.

Prepare to declare

When it comes to handing in your work, you’ll have to sign a declaration to say that anything without a reference is all your own work. Make sure you’re honest and provide all the relevant details of the AI tools you’ve used before signing your declaration.

Don’t risk it

Misusing AI is considered as cheating, so don’t risk losing marks or being disqualified. Remember the rules, speak with your teachers, and you’ll be conquering your assessments with confidence!
