Next generation T Level in Building Services Engineering for Construction approved

Eduqas and EAL are delighted to announce that the specification for our T level in Building Services Engineering for Construction has been approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) for first teaching from September 2025.

Commenting on this achievement, Ian Morgan, WJEC Eduqas Chief Executive:

“The approval of our specification reflects the hard work and commitment of WJEC Eduqas’ and EAL’s teams to produce an engaging qualification that will equip learners with the skills and knowledge to enter the workforce with confidence.

The engineering sector, particularly in building services, plays a crucial role in the UK economy, with a growing demand for skilled professionals. As the industry embraces new technologies and sustainable practices, there is a need for knowledgeable and adaptable workforce, and our T level directly addresses this shortage.

I would like to thank our stakeholders, including industry leaders and employers who have played a central role in the development of this qualification. Their input will ensure that our qualification continues to reflect current and future practices that will meet the needs of the industry.

Working alongside EAL, our teams will now focus on guiding providers to deliver our qualification with confidence through a raft of support which will include free professional learning and tailored digital resources.”

Alison Parkes, Managing Director of EAL, commented:
“The approval of the specification is recognition of the huge amount of hard work and collaboration that has gone into developing the next generation of this crucial T Level. I would like to thank EAL’s Product Team and Eduqas’ Qualification Development Team for their diligence, dedication and co-operation. Because of their work, the new qualification better reflects the needs of employers and the sector, and through the new occupational specialisms, will better prepare learners to enter their chosen profession. We join Eduqas in extending our thanks to key stakeholders in the sector for their input and we look forward to engaging with providers as they prepare for delivery.”

Developed with industry practice in mind

As part of the qualification development approach, we have actively involved employers, providers, industry bodies and higher education institutions in our development advisory groups, ensuring that those with firsthand knowledge of the sector could guide the creation of this qualification.

To further enhance this process, we launched a series of consultations to gather feedback on the current qualification, allowing stakeholders to influence the development of our new T Level.

We are confident we have produced a qualification that is manageable for both learners and schools and colleges whilst remaining relevant and engaging.

Innovative course content

T Levels are innovative two-year courses designed for 16 to 19-year-olds who have completed their GCSEs and are seeking a clear route into a vocational career.

Delivered over two years, the T level equips students with the knowledge and skills that are needed for entry into a range of construction occupations. In year one, learners will develop core knowledge of how the construction industry works, the principles of design and the role of technology and sustainability. In year two, they will have the opportunity to focus their learning on a specialist area including gas engineering, plumbing and heating engineering, electrotechnical engineering, refrigeration engineering, protection systems engineering or air conditioning engineering.

Supporting our providers

To aid our providers, we will be delivering a comprehensive package of support including free professional learning opportunities, which will guide practitioners in the delivery of the new qualification. This will be complemented with a suite of free digital resources, which include ‘ready-made’ delivery content such as worksheets and knowledge tests. These tools will support the delivery of the core content and will aid learners with independent study and revision.

In addition, we will continue to offer direct access to our subject specialist team, which is led by our T level Subject Officer, Tom Leahy. Tom has over 16 years of teaching experience and spent 25 years working in the Construction Industry. The team is on hand to offer pragmatic advice and guidance to ensure the successful delivery of this new qualification.
