OCR Qualification Withdrawals: What Are the Alternatives for GCSE Drama, A Level Music and More?

The announcement from OCR that it’s withdrawing a number of qualifications has prompted a lot of questions from schools and colleges. With subjects like GCSE Drama, A Level Drama & Theatre, A Level Music and A Level Geology affected, many departments are now considering what this means for their future cohorts.

In this blog, we’ll outline what’s changing, when, and explore the alternatives available with Eduqas.

Which OCR qualifications are being withdrawn?

The changes will affect a number of key GCSEs and A Levels, including the following:

·       GCSE Drama

·       A Level Drama and Theatre

·       A Level Music

·       A Level Geology

There are also a number of AS levels being withdrawn, which you can view the full list of here.

When will these qualifications officially end?

The qualification withdrawals from OCR are being introduced in phases, giving schools and colleges time to plan and ensuring that current learners are able to complete their courses without disruption.

For most AS Level qualifications, the final assessment opportunity will be in June 2027. This means that centres can continue to teach and enter students for these courses up to that point, but will need to plan for alternative provision for any new cohorts starting after the final entry window.

For some GCSEs and A Levels, the timeline extends slightly further, with a final assessment opportunity in June 2028. This extended window is intended to support a smoother transition, particularly for subjects where departments may need more time to review specifications and make informed decisions about future delivery.

You can view the full details of what is changing and when here.

What are the alternatives to OCR’s withdrawn qualifications?

Fortunately, there are clear options available, with Eduqas offering alternative GCSE and A Level qualifications in Drama, A Level Music, and A Level Geology.

Drama (GCSE & A Level)

For both GCSE and A Level Drama, Eduqas offers well-established specifications that closely match the content and assessment style schools are used to.

The qualifications balance practical performance and written coursework, ensuring continuity for teachers and students while maintaining robust assessment standards.

For centres looking for a more vocational or skills-based pathway, Eduqas also offers the Level 1/2 Vocational Award in Performing Arts. This qualification can provide a strong alternative to GCSE Drama or Music, particularly for students interested in hands-on learning and progression into the creative industries.

Music (A Level)

Schools affected by the withdrawal of OCR A Level Music can turn to Eduqas A Level Music as a strong alternative.

The specification supports both performance and composition, offering flexibility for a wide range of students.

Eduqas also provides comprehensive support and resources for teachers, helping departments maintain confidence and continuity in delivery.

Geology (A Level)

Perhaps most critically, Eduqas is the only provider currently offering A Level Geology in response to OCR’s withdrawal. This makes it the natural choice for schools wishing to continue offering this subject at post-16.

The Eduqas specification is designed to be engaging and academically rigorous, with a focus on practical fieldwork, enquiry-based learning, and clear assessment structures.

Why Choose Eduqas?

By choosing Eduqas, schools gain access to qualifications that are current, fully supported, and widely recognised, while ensuring that students have opportunities in subjects affected by OCR’s withdrawals.

Eduqas offer accessible, engaging specifications, alongside easy access to subject expert support and free online resources. This allows departments to confidently plan their curriculum and future entries.
