Supporting Your Learners: Modified Assessments at Eduqas

At Eduqas, we know how committed you are to supporting all your learners and we’re here to help you do just that. One of the practical ways we support accessibility in our assessments is by providing modified papers for learners who need them.

These specially adapted papers help ensure that learners with additional needs are not at a disadvantage during assessments. We also understand how busy the teaching environment can be, and how easy it is for these arrangements to be overlooked. This blog aims to raise awareness of what’s available and how you can access it.

What are modified assessments?

Modified assessments are adapted versions of our assessment materials, designed to support learners who may find standard formats inaccessible. This could be due to visual impairments, specific learning difficulties, or other individual needs.

Our modified formats include:

  • A4 and A3 large print papers (18pt, 24pt, 36pt bold)

  • Braille papers / tactile diagrams

  • Papers with modified language (where available)

  • Electronic PDFs for screen readers or text enlargement

  • Transcripts of listening assessments

How do I request modified assessments?

Requests should be made by Exam Officers through Access Arrangements Online (AAO), which can be accessed from the JCQ Centre Admin Portal (CAP) via Portal. For step by step instructions on how to request, read our guide here

We strongly encourage centres to submit orders as early as possible, ahead of the published deadlines:

  • November series - deadline: 20th September

  • January series - deadline: 4th October

  • May/June series - deadline: 31st January

If a learner needs a format not listed, please contact us directly at modifiedpapers@wjec.co.uk and we’ll do our best to help.

What about past papers?

We also provide modified versions of past papers to support revision and exam practice:

  • They’re uploaded to our Portal once each exam series concludes

  • Braille versions are available on request, either as hard copies or digital files

Don’t leave it too late

Planning ahead is essential. The earlier we’re aware of a learner’s needs, the more effectively we can support you in providing the right materials on time.
