Proposed adaptations to WJEC GCEs in summer 2021 – teacher consultation

Summer 2021 – GCSE French/German/Spanish - Centre Endorsement of Speaking NEA - Additional Guidance

Following its consultation, Ofqual has published the GCSE Subject Level Conditions and Requirements for Modern Foreign Languages and Certificate Requirements (2021). The criteria for the levels of attainment of Pass, Merit and Distinction are found in Table 1 on pages 20 and 21 of the document. These Subject Level Conditions, including the Speaking endorsement, are only valid for entries in Summer 2021.

WJEC Eduqas is now publishing additional guidance for the assessment of Range of Language for the Speaking endorsement. These can be found for each language under Resources>Key Documents>Summer 2021 Adaptations on the French, German and Spanish webpages. We have worked with other awarding bodies to produce this additional guidance for teachers of French, German and Spanish. The additional guidance is common to all exam boards and should be used alongside the common criteria for assessment when deciding on a level for Range of Language. The exemplification of grammatical structures should not be seen as a checklist, but rather as an indication of the type of grammatical structures required to fulfil the requirements of the level.

Further details regarding submission of spoken language statements by centres to WJEC Eduqas will be issued shortly.
